14. What challenges have you overcome in the past? How has doing so made your life more vibrant and full?

When I was 28, I stopped drinking completely. I'm an alcoholic, and it was time. I finally stopped for me, my hubby and our children. I've never done anything that hard as stopping. It wasn't all easy as pie. It was hard work, but I'm happy to be where I am in life. Sober and thrilled with life. I'm blessed.

Enough about that. Too heavy for this time at night. Have a good Tuesday.

In more and more places, the rules technically allow incremental housing. Backyard cottages, accessory dwelling units, and small infill homes are legal on paper; beautiful, glossy images of these homes are shared on city websites and included in planning documents. Yet these homes rarely get built—not because of public opposition or failed rezonings, but because routine procedures treat small homes like major developments.

What we have is not a failure of vision, but one of process.

I can honestly say I’ve never heard of Bolo Gelado de Brigadeiro, or any of the words that make up this Brazilian dessert’s name, but when I came across the reel of Ash Baber making it on Instagram, I knew I wanted to give it a whirl.

Determined to try this chocolatey confection for myself, I went over to his website and took a look at the recipe. When you first look at this recipe, it looks very long and decently complicated. There’s three different sections, each with their own list of ingredients. While there are a lot of ingredients, if you look at them individually they’re really not that wild, it’s just that there’s a lot of them. What is wild is that there is butter, eggs, and oil, as well as white sugar, brown sugar, and sweetened condensed milk, so it really ends up feeling like you need a ton of stuff to make one cake.

You have to make the brigadeiro, make the cake, make the milk soak, and put it all together.

So, was it worth the hassle? How long did it really take? And, of course, how many dishes did I make in the process?

Let’s start with the cost of ingredients. Like I said, nothing was too out of the ordinary, so everything was easily attainable from my local Kroger. The only thing I would say I don’t regularly have on hand on this list is buttermilk, and it’s a 50/50 chance on whether or not I have heavy cream on hand. However, I happened to be out of a lot of things I normally have, so I had to buy some stuff for this recipe I generally would’ve just had.

I bought two cans of condensed milk, and I buy the Eagle brand one, so those were $3.49 each. Usually I have at least one can of sweetened condensed milk on hand, but I still would’ve had to buy one anyways since the recipe calls for two. I only bought a pint of the Kroger brand buttermilk, so it was just $1.29. For the Kroger brand heavy cream, I went ahead and bought a quart, so that was $5.99. Normally I have plenty of butter, but I was completely out so I got two 2-stick packs of Vital Farms Unsalted Butter. I also normally have vegetable oil, but I was down to about one tiny splash, so I bought a new 40oz Crisco Vegetable Oil for $4.79.While I did have eggs, the recipe calls for six (which seems like a lot) so I had to buy a new pack, and I bought Pete & Gerry’s Organic Free Range eggs for $6.99, but you could easily cut down on this cost by buying the Kroger brand large white eggs for $1.79. Also, this one is optional, but I bought Simple Truth Chocolate Sprinkles for $2.69.

All of that came out to $28.73. Not horrible but not cheap, either.

After acquiring the ingredients, it was time to make the brigadeiro:

Two cans of Eagle Brand sweetened condensed milk, a pack of Vital Farms unsalted butter, Ghirardelli cocoa powder, and a quart of Kroger brand heavy whipping cream.

I know this is only the first photo of many, but I forgot to include the actual chocolate in the photo. It was Ghirardelli. And then upon making I came extremely close to forgetting to put in the condensed milk. I was very scatterbrained apparently.

This part, while easy, was definitely time consuming. I felt like it took longer than I expected for the mixture to thicken up, but I also feel like maybe I didn’t make it hot enough at first. I think I was nervous to burn the cream so I tried to keep it pretty medium-low, but it wasn’t really thickening up much until I turned it up a bit. Technically the recipe doesn’t say how long it takes, but it took me about thirty minutes, and I was constantly stirring it, so that was tedious.

After it had thickened up to the point that I can only describe as “probably good enough,” I set it aside to cool a bit before putting some cling wrap over top and putting it in the fridge to chill.

Here’s the layout of ingredients for the cake portion:

Arm & Hammer baking soda, King Arthur unbleached all-purpose flour, Domino light brown sugar, Pete and Gerry's organic free range eggs, instant espresso powder, Crisco vegetable oil, Domino granulated sugar, Kroger buttermilk pint, Vital Farms unsalted butter pack, Ghirardelli cocoa powder, and white vinegar.

Thankfully, this was basically just “throw everything in your stand mixer bowl and whip it together.” I put the cocoa powder and instant espresso powder (I know the recipe calls for instant coffee, but I assume this recipe can only benefit from the substitution) in the bottom of the stand mixer bowl first, then poured the hot water over it and whisked it into a smooth, thick paste:

I tossed everything else on top of it and got to mixin’. Here’s what we were looking like before the addition of the eggs and the buttermilk:

This was pretty damn gloopy, and weirdly grainy.

And after the addition:

The mixture was much more airy and light now, more like a fluffy texture. Almost mousse-like, but not quite at that level of lightness.

I opted to mix the flour in myself rather than with the stand mixer, because the bowl was honestly really full and it was a lot of flour. I didn’t want it to go exploding everywhere in the stand mixer.

When I started mixing the flour in, tiny clumps of flour started appearing all throughout the batter, like they didn’t quite mix in right. Definitely was starting to wish I had sifted the flour. I beat the clumps out best I could and poured it into the cake pan, then put it in the oven for one hour at 350 degrees Fahrenheit. There was so much batter in the pan that I was worried not even an hour would cook the cake all the way through, but when I used a knife to test it fresh out of the oven, it came out perfectly clean.

Putting that aside to cool, it was time to make the milk soak, which is just milk, cocoa powder, and sugar.

Once the cake and milk soak were both cooled, it was time to take the brigadeiro out of the fridge and put the whole dang thing together. Here’s the brigadeiro all thickened up:

Gawd dayum was this thicc. Rich and fudgy and oh so chocolatey. It was honestly incredible, but I was sure I was about to bend my spoon trying to mix it around. Handle with caution.

The cake cut in half easily, as it was very tall and made two very nice layers. I put the bottom layer in the cake pan I had baked it in, then poured half the milk soak over it. Scooped half the brigadeiro onto the first layer and smoothed it out over the surface, then slapped the top layer on top and poured the rest of the milk soak over it (I docked the top a bunch with a fork so the milk could go into the holes), and slathered that bad boy in the rest of the brigadeiro. There was so much brigadeiro on top, the cake pan could barely even contain my creation, the fudgy topping starting to spill over the sides.

The instructions say to let this puppy sit in the fridge overnight, and though it was hard not to slice right into it, I managed to let it rest in the fridge.

Once I took it out (it was heavy) and put sprinkles on top, it was glorious:

In the moment, I thought that was plenty of sprinkles, but looking at it now, I totally could’ve put more. It looks a little sparse.

I was eager to cut into it, and here’s the cross section:

My parents and I tried this cake at the same time and oh my gosh. It was probably the best chocolate cake I’ve ever had. I don’t even really like chocolate cake that much, but this one was so moist and rich, dense and fudgy and absolutely decadent. It was the kind you could only take a small slice of, and even then I needed some milk with it. It is not for the faint of heart, but it is for the fat of ass.

I had four of my friends try this cake and they all said it was incredibly banger, and even “dangerously good.” I was feeling pretty good that this turned out so yummy.

I will say this cake slides around a lot. The layer of brigadeiro in between the top and bottom cake layer make this thing slip and slide all over itself, and you can end up with a very slanted, divided cake if you aren’t careful. Cutting into it is messy, frosting it is messy, divvying it up into Tupperwares to give to other people is messy. But boy is it delicious.

For the dishes portion of this recipe test, this recipe is unique because it isn’t measured with cups and the like. You can measure everything on a digital scale, which made everything so much easier and made me use considerably less dishes. I used one bowl to weigh the brigadeiro ingredients in, one pot to cook the brigadeiro in, a rubber spatula to mix it, and another bowl to put in the fridge after it cooked. For the cake I used my stand mixer bowl, one attachment of the stand mixer, one whisk, a teaspoon, a tablespoon, and one rubber spatula to put it into the cake tin. I guess you can also count the cake tin in that, too. Oh, and a bowl for the eggs because I always crack eggs into a separate bowl first instead of straight into the cake batter. Finally, I used one small pot for the milk soak, a tablespoon, and another rubber spatula.

So, was it all worth it? The large ingredient list, the time that went into it, the dishes, and the cost (roughly, prices will vary for you, obviously).

I think yes! But this is definitely something to make for special occasions, or maybe for something like the holidays, when you need something to feed a lot of people. This cake makes a lot of cake.

I honestly liked making this cake and I’m very happy with the result. The dishes really weren’t so bad, and the praise you’ll get for how good this tastes outweighs the considerable effort of making it.

Back to Work

It was back to work today. I think I've gotten a bit of coding done, but we'll see what happens when I finish writing the unit tests *and* the guys who are supposed to hook it up to the UI take a run at it.

In other news, I was pinged by one of my fellow programmers today who was playing around with the OLE compound document format that our desktop files are stored in. I showed him the set of Java code that I wrote on top of Apache POI to provide additional support for features that we're using. Then I said, "Watch this."

I bounced into VS Code and fired up Cline and told it to look at these classes in my source base and then write a code snippet that would open up a desktop file and dump out all of the custom settings from the user defined property set. Now this isn't overly hard code to write, but even so, the resulting code was very nice and took advantage of features like try-with-resources and such. I cut the code out and emailed it to my coworker, suggesting that he could put this somewhere that we could get at it. :)

It was, in any case, faster than writing it myself and certainly not bad code.

On a completely different note, if no one is interested in the treadmill, I am going to list it sometime in the next few days as available for free on Nextdoor, which is a pretty good way to get large objects to leave my home. If you *are* interested, let me know.

Mourão, Manuela. 1999. “The representation of female desire in early modern pornographic texts, 1660-1745” in Signs, 24: 589-94.

The author notes a lack of attention paid to mid-17th century literary pornography, a telling absence in considerations of gender-related shifts in this era, while also noting that feminist analysis of pornography focuses mostly on contemporary issues and treats the genre as monolithic and inherently misogynistic. [Note: This article was written in the wake of the “pornography wars” of the ‘70s and ‘80s, which provides context for the author’s observation.] This article challenges that simplistic position and tries to examine 17th century pornography as pollical and social critique, as well as titillating entertainment.

While this article is fascinating reading, it touches only slightly on f/f representation, despite the regular presence of sex between women in pornographic works. Rather, the focus is on how female characters in pornographic texts are empowered to value and prioritize their own pleasure, and to convince men of the importance of providing, not just experiencing, pleasure. Even when discussing the “educational,” dialogue-based texts that feature female initiation of a woman into sexual pleasure, the author primarily focuses on how this illustrates the validation of women’s experiences, with little reference to the specifically homoerotic context.

An exception comes in the discussion of Satyra sotadica, when analyzing the rhetorical device of giving lip service to the inability of women to provide mutual sexual pleasure, set against scenarios that clearly contradict that claim. This is framed as one of a range of non-reproductive sexual experiences that “allow readers to begin to imagine a model of female desire.” However it is noted that, even as the central female characters of Satyra sotadica move on to ever more transgressive sex acts, they are depicted as preferring and gaining their most consistent enjoyment from each other. This preferential desire was more threatening to the status quo than isolated same-sex encounters.

The text also depicts voyeurism primarily in the context of women observing women, or women recounting sexual encounters to other women for their enjoyment. Thus even when m/f sex acts are described, the context is providing pleasure for a female audience.

These pornographic texts rarely represent male homoeroticism, much less provide it the tacit endorsement given to lesbian acts. (Keeping in mind that this is the era when a male homoerotic subculture was developing in London and elsewhere.) Thus a male audience is pressured into cross-gender identification in many of the work’s scenarios.

The article concludes by speculating about differences in the social context between 17th century and modern pornography that affect its reception as feminist versus anti-feminist.

Read this because a) I'd been meaning to, b) it was a yuletide EPH (which obviously I didn't fill, but you know... good intentions).

In the past, I've found Donoghue rather bleak, and preferred her non, fiction. (Maybe it was just that I read the one where everyone died of Spanish Influenza?)

This takes place across several hours, on a train that runs from the coast of Normandy to Paris, where it will famously fail to brake and blast through the wall of the train station (this was re-enacted in the movie Hugo, and captured in a tonne of contemporary photographs). Which is not what the book's about, other than as a driving sense of inevitable ruin. The book is about a few dozen characters, including the train itself, a slice of life as the world teeters on the edge of a new century. Many of the characters are historical figures, some of whom were on the train that day, a bunch more who might have been. There's an anarchist with a bomb, the railway employees, a painter, a secretary, several politicians, a sex worker, a medical student, some children, a variety of day labourers, all forced to into each other's company for the course of several hours. Many of them are some flavour of queer, several are not white, each has their own story. All have a complicated relationship with the racing pace of technological and cultural change, at a time when France has only been a Republic (again) for a few decades, and it's (again) not at all clear if this time will stick.

I often get confused by books with this many characters, especially when there's not much in the way of plot, and the book jumps between them pretty fast, but Donoghue makes them all so distinct, with their own voices, that I didn't have trouble this time. I also appreciated her deft touch at making the characters feel of that moment in history, rather than being stand ins for the contemporary reader. We hear about the Dreyfus Affair, for example, and mostly people just believe he's a traitor, even the anarchist, who theoretically should know better. If there's any author stand in, it's an elderly Russian lady's companion, who mostly seems to have things figured out, and is also a cranky weirdo. Actually, a lot of characters are cranky weirdos, and not necessarily good people, but also not the kind of vile that are terrible to spend time with.

I'm perhaps not at my most articulate explaining why I liked this, but mostly that it scratched my brain as a deeply considered idea of how life might have looked at another time, when people were like us, but also different.


"Mr Rowl" by D.K. Broster
I'm not sure if this is the second most popular one after The Jacobite Trilogy, or if The Wounded Name is. Anyway, another 1920s book by a lesbian author, about plausibly deniable Historical Gays. This one is set during the Napoleonic wars, and centres on a French officer who is a prisoner of war in England. He's initial held on parole in a bucolic town, but following Events, he ends up in a prison stockade, then on the prison hulks (de-masted ships floating in the English Channel). He has a low-key romance with one of the girls from the original town, and a series of oddly intense interactions with English officers (one of whom appears to be canonically queer). There's also crossdressing, and quite a bit of hurt/comfort.

Having come in to Broster on The Flight of the Heron, I was expecting the same kind of emotional romance plot, with the pivot of the story being around the relationship between the two main male characters. Thus was initially discombobulated by how meandering the plot ended up being. We follow "Mr Rowl" (the English pronunciation of Raoul) across a series of misfortunes as he wanders about England, not meeting either of the other significant male characters until half way through the book. The most intense action is packed into two chapters in the last third, which makes the structure a little lopsided; however, the plotlines that have been building do come together rather neatly, which I enjoyed.

I started watching the new Star Trek show not long after I finished this, and was immediately struck by the connection between how Broster writes honour-obsessed men in the 18th and 19th century, and the Klingons. Some of the "I must do this Because Honour" choices in this book—though they more or less made sense—did feel a little load-bearing in terms of plot. And the heroine did spend some time going, "Um, holy shit, why?" at a few of those choices. It does also lead to several of the most tropy h/c scenes, however, so I suppose I shouldn't complain.

I like that the main antagonists of the book were a) the controlling asshole boyfriend, and b) the British penal system.


Orbital by Samantha Harvey, narrated by Sarah Naudi
Firstly, I remember some debate about this when this came out: this book is not science fiction. It's literary fiction set on the International Space Station. If you wanted to have an argument for why it was SF, you could say, "Well there's an ongoing Moon mission, which there wasn't at the time of this writing." But there being a Moon mission has been on the books for a decade, so setting it slightly in the future so that the mission could be happening at the same time as the book is, frankly, not science fiction, and I don't know why people thought it was.

Secondly, oh my god why? I guess this was so popular because most people haven't really thought about what life on the I.S.S. might be like, and this was more or less informative on that point. If you've never even one time thought about the space program. It rapidly became clear that someone who's read multiple astronaut biographies may not be the target audience.

There were several neat scenes! I liked the bit about the cosmonaut talking on a HAM radio with random Earthlings, for example. However, the majority of the book was poetic reflections on either inane details of space life, or just looking at the Earth being pretty. Eventually the Astronauts go to bed, and then we just close out with long descriptions of the Earth being pretty. I may not have gotten the point of this book.

(While writing this, I discovered that www.HowManyPeopleAreInSpaceRightNow.com is no longer being maintained, which makes me sad.)

The snow has plastered our windows like blinds. This morning it scudded so thickly down our street that the air itself couldn't have been any clearer: it made walls instead of veils of the late streetlight. The yew trees look like calcified humps of stalagmite. It's still blowing around out there, bending the whippier evergreens of the neighbors' yard like a wind sock. I can hear a commuter train whistling dimly from over Route 16. I am informed we have broken the previous state record for snowfall in a day set by the 1997 April Fool's Day Blizzard which had itself surpassed the Blizzard of '78. Our porch is drifted ankle-deep.

Cross-trainer

I had a proper go on the cross-trainer after work. It will certainly suit for some while, on this first go it kicked my ass; I haven't been on one since they dropped the requirement for masking at the gym at work in Eastern Tennessee, after most people stopped caring about COVID-19. One of the nice things about starting again is that tangible progress is easily achieved for a while, I expect the same this time. Judging by my prior performance after enough workouts, I'll be kicking this machine's ass again someday but not for months yet. Someday I could graduate to a cardiostrong EX60 or somesuch but I don't expect to become that wealthy.
